DiJAI holds a Session on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI for Politics: The Digital Journalists Association of India (DiJAI), one of the five initiatives by the Prime Point Foundation, organised a special online session via Zoom titled "AI for Politics," exclusively for Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, a senior BJP leader and former Governor of Telangana and Puducherry. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan and her husband, Dr. Soundararajan, a Senior Medical Doctor, attended two sessions on August 9th and 11th, 2024, totaling four hours. The sessions were conducted by Prime Point Srinivasan, Chairman of DiJAI, and R Nurullah, Co-Chairman of DiJAI.

Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan’s childlike enthusiasm, despite her extensive experience in holding high offices, was truly inspiring. She demonstrated a strong commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest technological advancements, serving as a role model for other politicians.

 

AI for Journalists: The Digital Journalists Association of India (DiJAI) conducted an exclusive online Zoom session on August 12, 2024, for the journalists and writers of Thamarai Brothers Media, the publication division of the leading Tamil daily Dinamalar. Prime Point Srinivasan and R. Nurullah led the two-hour session, which was attended by 55 writers and journalists, including R Lakshmipathy, representing the top management of Dinamalar group.

Thamarai Brothers Media is the first media organisation to request DiJAI hold an "AI for Journalists" session exclusively for its stakeholders.

@Digital Journalists Association of India (DiJAI) organises a workshop at AAA College of Engineering and Technology, Sivakasi on Saturday, 24th March 2018.  DiJAI is also launching a Students Forum at Sivakasi to involve the students of various colleges in positive digital journalism.  Around 300 students from 8 Colleges participate.

Fundamentals of Digital Journalism - Workshop at Soka Ikeda College - 12th Sep 2017

A workshop for 90 minutes was held at Sokda Ikeda Arts and Science College for women on Tuesday, the 12th September 2017.  The  purpose of the workshop was to educate the student members on the steps to be followed for writing an article.

Dr R Jagannathan, President of the Management Committee of the College also participated.  Bharathi Thamizhan, President of DiJAI interacted with the students on the current trends in digital journalism and the expectations of the readers.

K. Srinivasan, Founder Chairman of DiJAI made a presentation on the three steps to be followed while writing an article.  He also made announcement of the Mentoring Scheme for the student Members.

Workshop on Digital Journalism - Full presentation

Coinciding with the second Remembrance Day of Dr Abdul Kalam, DiJAI launched the Students Forum in two Colleges viz. (1) Dr MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science for Women and (2) Soka Ikeda College of Arts & Science for women at Chennai on 27th July 2017.  Around 65 student members from both the colleges have been enrolled after a rigorus selection process.  The students from different domains with good writing skills (Tamil or English) and with a passion for 'Digital Journalism' were selected. Students Forum for DiJAI formed in two Colleges

Coinciding with the second Remembrance Day of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, on 27th July 2017, 125th edition of ezine PreSense and the Students Forum of Digital Journalists Association of India (DiJAI) were launched at Dr MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science for women, Chennai.  Dr Mariazeena Johnson, Pro-Chancellor of Sathyabama University was the Chief Guest and launched the initiatives.  DiJAI is one of the initiatives of PreSense.

Susan Koshy, Editor of ezine PreSense tracing the history of the ezine PreSense explained the purpose of Students Forum.  While delivering the inaugural address, Dr Mariazeena Johnson wanted a similar DiJAI Students Forum to be started in a grand manner in their University.  Representatives from other Colleges who attended the event wanted a similar Students Forum to be launched in their institutions also.  Presently DiJAI plans to launch the Students Forum in four or five institutions in the next six months.  

Presently, DiJAI Students Forum is launched in two Chennai based Colleges, viz. (1) Dr MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science for Women and (2) Soka Ikeda College of Arts & Science for women.  The student  members were enrolled through a rigorous selection process by the College Authorities.  Around 65 students from these Colleges are now enrolled in the Students forum.

Students from different domains with good writing skills (Tamil or English) and with a passion to become a good Digital Journalists were the only criteria for selection.  

Before the launch of Students Forum, an exclusive interview with Dr Abdul kalam, recorded over phone in August 2017  by Prime Point Srinivasan (Editor in Chief, PreSense) was screened.  In this exclusive interview, Dr Kalam has given six suggestions to Media persons to be part of national development.  The six point agenda set by Dr Abdul kalam will be the focus for the Students Forum.  

DiJAI will handhold the students to become a good Digital journalists focussing on positive and development journalism.  The interview with Dr Abdul Kalam is embedded here.

After the launch of  the DiJAI Students Forum, a workshop was held on the Digital Journalism.  Details of the workshop with complete presentations will be given in the next posting.

Digital Journalists Association of India (DiJAI), the recent initiative of your ezine PreSense, was inaugurated on 2nd April 2016 at IIT Madras by Dr Santhosh Babu IAS, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Corporation.  The inauguration was followed by a workshop on "Essentials of Digital Journalism".  Highlights of the speeches:

• The digital audience of today want to see latest and up-to-date news and not news that is even a day old.  Digital journalists should cater to the needs of smart phone users also.
• Digital journalists should learn to use the 'Big data' to understand human preferences and help make their stories more meaningful  
• Professional ethics should be inculcated as each digital journalist’s personal ‘Lakshman Rekha'. DiJAI should facilitate this and create awareness.

•  Present day readers are not satisfied with just stories.  They demand supporting data too.
• Big data can be used to solve complex problems in digital journalism.
• There are several free tools in the internet that can be effectively used by the digital journalists.
• Drupal and WordPress (both open source) can be used for news sites.  Recently, New York Observer migrated from Drupal to WordPress.
• 'Google Translate' Android app can be used to interact with people of different language.

N Ramesh, Advocate - "Legal Aspects in Digital Journalism"    

• The Indian Constitution is the basis for fundamental rights.  The Constitution does not provide any special freedom to 'Press'.  The rights and duties applicable to all the citizens are applicable to the media too.
• In the case of messages, where intrusion of privacy is involved, all the persons who have shared such messages defaming others are chargeable with civil and criminal liability. However, statements made in the public domain are subject to criticism. Such criticism will not come under defamation.
• 'Hate speech' and 'defamation' have different definitions.
• Many digital media writers do violate several codes.  The Government should enact laws to regulate the digital media.

Cyber Simman, Technology Columnist and Senior Journalist - "Ethics in Digital Journalism"

• All journalists, including digital journalists, should be aware of the do’s and don’ts.
• Basic ethics have not changed over the years, in spite of all development and progress.  They however need to be updated.
• Digital journalists should follow four important fundamentals viz. (1) accuracy and truth, (2) reliability, (3) responsibility and (4) neutrality.
• The fear, concern and debates that are being held today due to the growth of digital media, were present even in 1858 when the telegram was introduced. It is considered the second revolution in media, the first being the printing technology. The telegram when introduced, was considered 'too fast for the truth'.

DiJAI plans to conduct similar workshops to hone the professional skills and to bring together digital journalists at a global level.

DiJAI will kick start its activities with a workshop on "Essentials of Digital Journalism" on Saturday, 2nd April 2016 at IIT Madras.  Tentatively, the programme will be as follows:
